Tactical Data Links (TDLs) are systems that exchange real-time tactical data among different platforms. They enhance situational awareness and decision-making. They are critical for modern air forces, as well as land and maritime units, enabling swift and secure communication. Training in the use of TDL systems is essential for improving air force capabilities and NATO uses STANAG 5555 to define training levels. The aim is to ensure that military personnel are proficient in the operation, management, and utilization of TDLs in various operational scenarios, to achieve interoperability and effective communication among Allied forces.
The European Air Group recently hosted a training needs workshop in Schleswig, to clarify the required levels of operators’ knowledge and skills for each of 4 levels of TDL operators. During this workshop, the EAG created syllabi for Levels 1 and 2 and is now working on syllabi for Levels 3 and 4. Once these are complete, the next step will be to prepare a EAG TDL exercise.
